Vicki has an MA (Hons) degree in political science from Canterbury University, and was awarded an Honorary PhD in Commerce from Lincoln University in 1998.

She was elected to the Christchurch City Council at age 19, while at University, and was elected Mayor of the City at age 34. Stood down after nine years in the job in 1998.

She has a varied work background which includes everything from social work to politics, and serving as a member of the NZ Local Government Commission which undertook New Zealand’s major local government restructuring in the 1980s.

Vicki has chaired the Learning Discovery Trust which has set up two new schools, Discovery and Unlimited in the state education sector, and has been very involved in education for the last ten years. Has two sons aged 18 and 12.

She has served on a wide range of boards and advisory committees, including:

  • the Reserve Bank
  • the Science and Innovation Advisory Council
  • the Christchurch Airport Company
  • Christchurch City Holdings Ltd
  • the Prime Minister’s Employment Task Force
