History

CarbonScape was incorporated in late 2006. In 2007, the company began preliminary biomass-to-carbon trials with the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. An R&D-intensive period followed (2008-2015), leading to the development of biochar, bio-oil, green coke, activated carbon and graphite at laboratory scale.

In 2009, CarbonScape was the winner of the Judges’ Choice Award at the Financial Times (UK) Climate Change Challenge out of 216 contestants.

In 2012, the company came second in the Dutch Postcode Lottery Green Challenge out of 509 contestants.

In 2013, CarbonScape entered into a 9,000 tonnes per annum green coke supply agreement with New Zealand Steel and Bluescope Steel of Australia.

In 2014, the company applied for global patents for methodology & apparatus for the production of green coke, activated carbon and graphite.

In 2015, the company entered into a non-binding agreement with Watercare Services to develop customised activated carbon with funding support from Callaghan Innovation.

In 2016, the company designed and commissioned a graphite and activated carbon pilot plant which will be completed in the second half of 2017.
